Anthony Whiting, has lived in Latin America, North Africa, Asia, Italy, Sweden and England in addition to the U.S. Studying and working in these diverse cultures has helped him develop unusual empathy and sensitivity to people, places and the natural world as well as fluency in five languages.
Anthony received a B.Arch. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and subsequently served as an architect in the Peace Corps in Tunisia. He practiced architecture internationally for 21 years while based in Africa, Italy and England. His works are in numerous collections on both sides of the Atlantic and he has had numerous one-man and group exhibitions in England and the U.S.
Anthony has studied painting at graduate university level and at workshops with Barbara Nechis, Al Brouillette, Jean Dobie, Paul Leveille, Margaret Martin, Charles Sovek and Robert Burridge. He has art teaching experience to groups and private students in his studios in his former studios in Rome, London, New York, Greenwich, CT and now, Jacksonville, FL. He is a painting instructor for beginner and intermediate artists at community education programs at Fletcher Senior High School in Neptune Beach, Florida.
Inspiration for his painting comes from nature in all its forms -- mineral, wood, floral, birds, animal and aquatic life. He uses design principles of contrast, rhythm, repetition and where appropriate, introduces rich sensuality or humor into his works.
In Jacksonville, Anthony was the proud recipient of the brAIDS ARTreach 2006 First Prize award for his painting "Contemplation" and was also the signature artist at the following year’s event.
